Dmitri Mendeleev was born on Feb. 7, 1834 in Tobolsk, Siberia. He was the youngest of seventeen children! His father was Ivan Pavlovitch Mendeleyev, a director of a local gym who became blind and died when Dmitri was only a child. His mother, Maria Dmitriyevna Korniliev, was forced to work at her family's glass factory after his fathers death. One day, while Dmitri was, at what was once his fathers gym , his mother's glass factory burned down. So, at age 14, he and his family had no way to support themselves.
His mom then, moved to Moscow, intending to enrolling Dmitri in college. Dmitri was enrolled in college and awarded a full scholarship to St. Petersburg. Soon after though, his mother died from Tuberculosis. Dmitri was also diagnosed with this disease and had to complete his last year of college from his room. At around 1854, he published his first paper entitled " Chemical Analysis of a Sample from Finland". He graduated from college with a Medal of Excellence for being first in his class.
A year later, in 1855, he moved to Simferopol in the Crimean peninsula. He obtained a job as Chief Science Master of a local gymnasium. Within a year, he had returned to normal health, with no signs of Tuberculosis.
